The Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse will provide comprehensive, timely, and high-quality nursing care to patients presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, trauma, and medical emergencies. This role involves rapid patient assessment, triage, emergency interventions, continuous monitoring, stabilization, and coordination of care to ensure optimal patient outcomes in a fast-paced emergency setting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties:

• Provide direct nursing care to patients presenting with medical, surgical, pediatric, trauma, and other emergency conditions.
• Perform rapid patient assessment, triage, and prioritization of care based on the severity and urgency of patients’ conditions.
• Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, neurological status, and other clinical indicators to promptly identify changes in patient condition.
• Administer medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, and emergency treatments according to physician orders and established protocols.
• Initiate and maintain intravenous access, oxygen therapy, airway management, and other emergency nursing interventions as required.
• Assist physicians and multidisciplinary healthcare teams during emergency procedures, resuscitations, trauma management, and life-saving interventions.
• Assess patients’ responses to treatment and promptly communicate significant findings to the appropriate healthcare providers.
• Implement individualized emergency nursing care plans and continuously evaluate patient outcomes.
• Provide wound care, pain management, fracture stabilization, and other therapeutic interventions as indicated.
• Ensure patient safety through adherence to emergency care standards, infection prevention measures, and emergency preparedness protocols.
• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, discharge instructions, and follow-up care when appropriate.
• Participate actively in emergency response situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), mass casualty incidents, and disaster preparedness activities.

Administrative Duties:

• Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely patient records, triage documentation, nursing notes, and emergency department reports.
• Collaborate closely with physicians, specialists, laboratory personnel, radiology staff, pharmacists, and other multidisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated patient care.
• Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, patient safety standards, and hospital policies.
• Facilitate patient admissions, transfers, referrals, discharges, and continuity of care activities.
• Ensure proper utilization, readiness, and maintenance of emergency medical equipment, supplies, and medications within the department.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, emergency department audits, and patient safety programs.

Educational Duties:

• Provide comprehensive health education and emotional support to patients and families regarding emergency conditions, treatment plans, and recovery processes.
• Participate in clinical training, emergency preparedness drills, continuing professional development, and competency assessments.
• Support orientation and mentorship of newly assigned nursing staff and students within the emergency department.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in emergency nursing, trauma care, resuscitation practices, and evidence-based clinical guidelines.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing.
• Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in emergency nursing, critical care, trauma care, or acute care settings.

• Knowledge of emergency nursing principles, trauma care, resuscitation techniques, medication administration, patient safety practices, and common emergency conditions.
• Ability to prioritize multiple patients and tasks while maintaining high standards of care and patient safety.
• Proficiency in the operation of emergency medical equipment and monitoring devices.
• Strong attention to detail, compassion, professionalism, and commitment to quality patient care.
