The Operating Room (OR) Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of the Operating Room to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative services. The role involves surgical scheduling, resource coordination, staff supervision, patient flow management, quality assurance, and collaboration with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal surgical outcomes and operational efficiency.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties:

  • Coordinate and oversee daily operating room activities to ensure smooth and efficient surgical services.
  • Ensure that operating rooms are appropriately prepared, equipped, and staffed prior to surgical procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with surgical safety protocols, infection prevention standards, and perioperative care guidelines.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care throughout the perioperative process.
  • Facilitate timely patient preparation, transfer, and recovery processes to optimize surgical workflow.
  • Assist in managing emergency and urgent surgical cases while balancing elective surgery schedules.
  • Monitor patient safety practices and support prompt resolution of clinical concerns affecting surgical services.
  • Ensure availability and proper utilization of surgical instruments, equipment, implants, and consumables required for procedures.
  • Participate in the investigation and management of perioperative incidents, adverse events, and patient safety concerns.

Administrative Duties:

  • Coordinate and manage operating room schedules in collaboration with surgeons, anesthetists, and relevant departments.
  • Optimize operating room utilization and workflow efficiency to minimize delays, cancellations, and scheduling conflicts.
  • Monitor operating room performance indicators, including surgical volume, turnaround times, case delays, and utilization rates.
  • Maintain accurate records of surgical schedules, operating room activities, equipment usage, and related documentation.
  • Coordinate procurement, inventory management, and stock control of surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and functionality of operating room equipment and report deficiencies promptly.
  • Collaborate with sterile processing, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and other support departments to ensure uninterrupted surgical services.
  • Participate in policy development, quality improvement initiatives, audits, and accreditation activities related to perioperative services.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards governing surgical services.

Educational Duties:

  • Provide orientation, mentorship, and ongoing support to newly assigned operating room personnel.
  • Facilitate continuing professional development activities related to perioperative nursing, surgical safety, and infection prevention.
  • Promote adherence to evidence-based practices and current standards in perioperative care.
  • Participate in training programs, workshops, and competency assessments for operating room staff.
  • Stay updated with advancements in surgical technologies, perioperative practices, and healthcare regulations.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, or a related healthcare field.
  • Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrable experience in Operating Room or Perioperative Services, with at least 2 years in a supervisory, coordination, or leadership role.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing practices, surgical procedures, infection prevention, sterile techniques, and patient safety standards.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and ensure efficient surgical workflow management.
  • Knowledge of operating room scheduling systems, inventory management, and healthcare quality improvement principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in healthcare documentation systems, reporting processes, and hospital information systems.
