The Midwife Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based, and compassionate maternal and newborn care throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal periods. The role involves antenatal assessment, labor and delivery management, postnatal care, family planning services, patient education, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe motherhood and positive birth outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties:

• Provide comprehensive antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn nursing and midwifery care in accordance with established clinical guidelines and standards.
• Conduct maternal and fetal assessments, including monitoring maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, labor progress, and overall maternal well-being.
• Manage normal labor and delivery while promptly identifying and escalating obstetric and neonatal complications requiring specialized intervention.
• Assist obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals during examinations, procedures, and emergency interventions.
• Monitor and support mothers during labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period.
• Provide newborn assessment, routine neonatal care, thermal care, breastfeeding support, and early identification of neonatal complications.
• Administer medications, intravenous therapies, immunizations, and other prescribed treatments in accordance with approved protocols.
• Provide family planning counseling and reproductive health services, including contraceptive education and follow-up care.
• Promote safe motherhood practices, infection prevention measures, and patient safety standards.
• Recognize obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labor, fetal distress, and neonatal resuscitation needs, and initiate appropriate interventions.
• Support breastfeeding initiation and provide lactation counseling to mothers and families.
• Educate mothers and families on pregnancy care, childbirth preparation, newborn care, nutrition, hygiene, danger signs, and follow-up requirements.

Administrative Duties:

• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely maternal, newborn, and nursing documentation.
• Record labor progress, delivery outcomes, medications administered, and clinical observations in accordance with hospital standards.
• Collaborate closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses, anesthetists, laboratory personnel, and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
• Participate in maternal and neonatal admissions, referrals, transfers, discharges, and continuity of care activities.
• Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of delivery room equipment, neonatal care equipment, and medical supplies.
• Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, patient safety standards, and hospital policies.
• Participate in maternal and perinatal audits, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety programs.

Educational Duties:

• Provide comprehensive education and emotional support to pregnant women, mothers, newborn caregivers, and families.
• Conduct health education sessions on maternal health, newborn care, breastfeeding, nutrition, immunization, family planning, and reproductive health.
• Participate in clinical training, continuing professional development, and competency assessments.
• Support orientation and mentorship of newly assigned midwives, nurses, and students.
• Stay updated with current evidence-based practices, maternal and newborn health guidelines, and advancements in midwifery care.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Midwifery or Nursing with Midwifery specialization.
• Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in maternal and newborn care, labor and delivery, maternity ward, or related clinical settings.
• Training in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Strong knowledge of maternal, newborn, reproductive, and family health services.
• Excellent clinical assessment and critical thinking skills in managing normal and high-risk pregnancies, labor, delivery, and postpartum care.
• Proficiency in fetal monitoring, labor management, newborn assessment, and neonatal resuscitation techniques.
• Strong communication, counseling, and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with mothers, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
• Knowledge of infection prevention, patient safety, medication administration, and emergency obstetric care principles.
• Ability to respond effectively to obstetric and neonatal emergencies in a timely manner.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, compassion, and commitment to quality maternal and newborn care.
• Proficiency in healthcare documentation systems and patient record management.
