The Interventional Radiologist will specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions using minimally invasive, image-guided procedures. The role involves performing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions utilizing fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and other imaging modalities to provide effective alternatives to conventional surgery, improve patient outcomes, and support multidisciplinary patient care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Duties:

  • Evaluate patients referred for image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures through clinical assessment, review of imaging studies, and multidisciplinary consultation.

Perform a wide range of minimally invasive image-guided procedures, including biopsies, drainages, vascular access procedures, angiography, embolization, thrombolysis, stenting, ablation therapies, and other interventional radiology procedures within the scope of practice.

  • Diagnose and manage vascular and non-vascular conditions using advanced interventional techniques.
  • Provide comprehensive pre-procedural, intra-procedural, and post-procedural patient care, including informed consent, risk assessment, and follow-up management.
  • Manage procedural complications and interventional radiology emergencies effectively and promptly.
  • Interpret relevant diagnostic imaging studies to guide procedural planning and patient management.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, oncologists, gastroenterologists, nephrologists, vascular specialists, emergency physicians, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and treatment planning meetings.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely procedural documentation, patient records, and radiological reports.
  • Ensure compliance with radiation safety standards, infection prevention protocols, procedural guidelines, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of interventional radiology services, including equipment utilization and procedural workflows.
  • Collaborate with radiology technologists, nurses, and support staff to ensure high-quality patient care and procedural safety.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

Educational Duties:

  • Educate patients and their families regarding interventional procedures, treatment options, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes.
  • Mentor radiology residents, medical students, technologists, nurses, and junior healthcare professionals in interventional radiology principles and techniques.
  • Conduct and participate in multidisciplinary conferences, educational activities, research projects, and continuing medical education programs.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to remain updated with advancements in interventional radiology technologies, devices, and evidence-based practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical Doctor (MD) degree from a recognized institution.
  • Specialization in Radiology with fellowship training or demonstrated expertise in Interventional Radiology.
  • Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia.
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable post-specialization experience in interventional radiology practice.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong expertise in image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including vascular and non-vascular interventions.
  • Proficiency in the interpretation of fluoroscopic, ultrasound, CT, and other imaging modalities relevant to interventional procedures.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety principles, procedural sedation, patient monitoring, and peri-procedural care.
  • Ability to manage procedural complications and emergency interventions effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
